Decker won a regional talent contest with her version that was a cover of the Patsy Montana song I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart when she was only nine. Decker was a resident of Georgia in the year she turned fifteen years old. She had been writing music regularly and was regularly visiting Nashville to find discounts. When she was 17 and a Big Yellow Dog Records representative saw her work and began to sell her songs to labels as well as musicians. When Mercury Records president David Massey saw the demos of Decker, he sent them along to L.A. Reid head of the associated Island/Def Jam label group and Reid has signed her to a record deal. Jessie James' first album, titled Jessie James and released in August 2009, was her self-titled debut. Jessie James achieved a reasonable level of success and had Wanted being able to make it into the Top 40 charts. Decker always thought of herself as a singer from the country genre however, the album's promotion and production was geared towards an audience that was more popular. Decker was unhappy with two more singles from the album, fought against the management of the label to get better control. Decker then released her second single Boys in the Summer which was more than a country track. Decker's album, titled Daughter of a Gypsy (or Sweet American Dreams), was dropped by Mercury when two of her singles failed to chart on the country charts.
